In this Breakout Session from the 2024 M3 Conference, Dr. Nicholas Comninellis discusses health through the eyes of culture. He cites health interventions that are ineffective due to cultural irrelevancy, explains four principles of cultural competence, and describes the process of observing, understanding, and adjusting to local cultures.
Nicholas Comninellis, MD, MPH, DIMPH, is President and Professor at INMED, the Institute for International Medicine. He is also faculty Research Medical Center Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Comninellis has decades of experience serving in medical missions, including in Shanghai, Angola, and Honduras. Dr. Anne Alaniz: A Shepherd, A Builder and A Healer – From Layers of Poverty to Dimensions of Global Health
In this Plenary Session from the recent M3 Conference, Dr. Anne Alaniz shares her incredible journey of how God has used her personal experiences and struggles growing up in a small village in Malawi to now lead survivor driven change in the community where she grew up. She addresses both the spiritual and physical challenges of unstacking the layers of poverty. Her story embodies the power of community, service, grace, humility, and hope.
Dr. Anne Alaniz is a gynecologic oncologist who has been working for Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, since 2012. She is also the Co-Founder of Pothawira (Safe Haven) Christian Mission Organization in Malawi. Click here to learn more about the work of Pothawira.

We are excited to announce that the 10th Anniversary Mobilizing Medical Missions (M3) Conference is set for Friday, February 21, and Saturday, February 22, 2025, in Houston, Texas!
We are preparing for a special year and are already working on a couple of new additions, including offering CME credits during some of the conference Breakout Sessions. In previous years, CME’s have only been available during the Pre-Conference Workshop, which will continue to offer CME’s as well.
More information will be coming soon, and announcements will go out when registration opens, so keep an eye out for future updates.
